A day of the LORD is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls. I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped.
Like child abuse and slavery, rape is still a very serious problem throughout the world. Yet a reading of the Bible could lead you to believe that this violence against women is justifiable and inconsequential. Rape is often times a spoil for men’s war throughout the Bible, with God giving men permission to rape women as a reward for winning a war in His name. When rape is punishable, the punishments are often menial and only further illustrate that rape isn’t considered an important problem to God.
If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.
