GENERATIONS OF SLAVE OWNERS HAVE USED THE BIBLE TO PROMOTE SLAVERY, AND THE BIBLE SUPPORTS THEIR POSITION.
You who are slaves must accept the authority of your masters with all respect. Do what they tell you--not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel.
- 1 Peter 2:18
If you were to walk onto a slave plantation in the U.S. South, you would likely find a plantation master reading passages of the Bible to his slaves after a long day's work. Similar to the demands God places on women and children, God told slaves to obey their masters with the same respect and fear as God. There are numerous examples of Bible verses that slave owners could read aloud, instilling fear in slaves and perpetuating their own power. Not only is slavery encouraged and practiced in the Bible, but oftentimes with very peculiar rules and restrictions by God.
Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. -Leviticus 25:44
